Many private and public vocational-technical schools offer cdl tractor-trailer / truck driver training programs. Students truck drivers will learn to maneuver large vehicles on busy streets and in highway traffic. They will also learn to inspect trucks and balance freight for compliance with local, Federal and State, regulations. Persons interested in attending a truck driving school should check with local trucking companies to make sure that the school's training is acceptable to their perspective state and policies.
CDL Truck Driver Training
For most truck drivers taking a cdl truck driver-training course is an excellent way of preparing for a truck driving job and for anyone trying to obtain a commercial driver's license. Some high school and college courses offer cdl truck driver training. Automotive mechanics would be very helpful in the trucking business. Trucking companies that offer training to new truck drivers is usually informal, and may only consist of 1-2 days of instruction from an experienced driver / trainer, sometimes with minimal pay or even the on new drivers own time. New drivers may also ride with and observe experienced truck drivers / trainers before they are allowed to make their own runs. Some trucking companies give 3 to 5 days of classroom instruction covering trucking basics, like loading and operating a dry van or flatbed trailer, company procedures, and or the preparation of delivery forms and company orders. Some Trucking companies teach their drivers truck sales. Drivers also may receive training on the various types of products they haul, so that they will be effective workers.
New Truck Drivers
Most people have had other jobs and enter their truck driving professions directly out of trucking school; most truck drivers previously had jobs in other industries. Drivers that have experience in the Armed Forces can be a plus. In most cases, a person may also starting as a truck driver's helper, driving part of the day and helping to load and unload freight is a plus. Most helpers will receive promotion when driving vacancies occur or other drivers move up or retire. New drivers sometimes start on smaller trucks like straight or panel trucks. As they grow in knowledge and gets experience driving their trucks, they may be offer better truck driving jobs.
